One of the biggest questions that people have about becoming a lawyer online has to do with whether or not it’s safe to skip law school and just study on your own instead. It seems like an enticing idea, especially if you don’t have the money to pay thousands of dollars each year in tuition fees and living expenses. Many people assume that the only way to become a lawyer is by going to law school, but that simply isn’t true – you don’t need to go to law school in order to become a lawyer, and here are some reasons why…
What is an accredited law school?
Accredited law schools are those that have been approved by the American Bar Association, which is the body that governs legal education in America. In order to obtain accreditation, a school must meet certain requirements set by the ABA, such as having an adequate faculty and library resources. In general, there are two types of accredited law schools: fully accredited and provisionally-accredited.
The difference is that only fully accredited schools can offer the necessary degree (J.D.) needed to take the bar exam and practice law in all fifty states; provisionally-accredited schools can only offer students a post-graduate degree (LLM) which doesn’t qualify them for state bars, but does provide work experience and prepares them for state exams.
What does it mean to be accredited as an online law school?
If you are thinking about become a lawyer online, and you want to do so online, then it is important that your school is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). The ABA accredits law schools based on meeting certain standards. These standards include things like having an accreditation process, the faculty and administration’s qualifications, curriculum content and quality, academic support services such as student counseling centers or libraries, and job placement rates for graduates.
Schools that have been accredited by the ABA may also be approved for Title IV funding under the Higher Education Act of 1965. Title IV funding can come from a variety of sources, including Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and work-study programs.
How can I make sure my law degree will be accepted by the state bar associations where I want to practice law?
To make sure your degree will be accepted by the state bar associations, you’ll need to check with them before you apply for admission. If your degree is from an ABA-accredited law school, then it should not be difficult for you to find out if it is accepted by the state bar association. If you are unsure of how your degree will be accepted by the state bar association where you want to practice law, then contact them directly and ask. Be sure to inquire about any additional requirements they may have as well in order to make sure that your application will not be incomplete when it is submitted.
After learning about which laws and rules the individual state bar has for new lawyers, it is time to take the next step and explore what schools can help you reach this goal. For example, one could go through Kaplan University’s online ABA-accredited J.D. program (or there are other schools too).
Not only will their online courses allow students to pursue their education without being confined by location or traditional brick and mortar programs but their online coursework also come at a fraction of the cost found at traditional universities! Kaplan’s tuition starts at $10K per year which makes their degrees more affordable than those offered by other top tier institutions like Harvard who charge $54K per year.
Will employers accept my online degree or diploma in lieu of attending a traditional campus program?
Some employers do accept online degrees and diplomas in lieu of attending traditional campus programs, but not all. The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) is the body which accredits law schools in the US. To be considered an accredited law school, they must have been in operation for at least five years and have at least 75 students enrolled per class. There are many online law programs that are fully accredited by AALS.

ALU’s programs are fully interactive and include an internship with a local firm, so you’ll be able to put your knowledge into practice right away. ALU is also committed to providing access for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Pros and Cons?
There are many law schools online, and you can find one that matches your needs. For example, there are schools for people who would like to work in criminal law and then there are also schools for people who would like to work as immigration lawyers. Many online programs offer part-time or evening classes which can be useful if you have a full time job and want to go back to school.
Online programs allow you the opportunity to do your classwork at your own pace, so if you’re someone who has difficulties with tests or deadlines, this might be the perfect option for you. -ABA accredited schools usually require an undergraduate degree before applying to their program. ABA stands for American Bar Association and they regulate law schools in America.
If you want to study international law, then it is likely not necessary to attend an ABA school but some of these degrees may still be accredited by other organizations such as the British Commonwealth Council of Legal Education or the Australian National University College of Law. If you don’t attend an ABA approved program but still pass your state’s bar exam, then when you apply for jobs outside of your state where they ask whether or not you attended an ABA approved program, it will say no even though it is true that you passed your state’s exam
Do I need to have previous experience? What are the Requirements?
The American Bar Association (ABA) is the largest professional organization in the US, with over 400,000 members. They are primarily made up of judges, lawyers, law professors and law students from around the country. The ABA has some strict admission requirements for their member schools and it can be difficult for those who cannot afford tuition or move to one of these cities. Luckily, there are other options available for those who want to become lawyers but have restricted mobility.
The University of Baltimore School of Law offers online courses through their Alumni College program. These include several certificate programs that allow you to obtain your J.D., complete with an online course curriculum and a final exam administered at one of the UB campuses across the country.
You will also receive graduate credit for any coursework completed. It’s important to note that this degree is not officially accredited by the ABA. Meaning that graduates would need to take additional steps like applying to take the bar exam after graduation or seeking out reciprocity agreements in order to practice law in another state. Still, this option provides prospective lawyers with a legitimate degree and puts them on the path towards success if they plan on working as an attorney outside of Maryland.
